We recommend physical exams, with gynecological exams, annually for most women. Although young teens don’t typically need pelvic exams, they should still see a provider for a checkup to ensure there aren’t any issues requiring further investigation. Older teens and women require more in-depth exams, and our experienced nurse practitioners create a safe and welcoming space where they can feel comfortable discussing their concerns without judgment. 

Most well-woman exams include:

• A medical history review
• Checking vital signs, like heart rate, temperature, blood pressure, and respiration
• A discussion and review of lifestyle and behavioral factors, like alcohol and tobacco use and your sexual history 
• A review of any recent or current symptoms 
• Breast exams
• Pelvic exams
• HPV (human papillomavirus) testing
• Pap smear to test cervical cells for abnormalities 
• STD tests (when needed) and counseling 
• Birth control counseling (when needed)
• Immunizations, such as the HPV vaccine, when needed
  

Although most women have these checkups annually, some women may need a follow-up visit or additional testing; an abnormal pap test, lumps in the breast, or a family history of gynecological diseases may necessitate additional care, and we’ll refer you to the appropriate specialists when needed. 

Staying up-to-date with your gynecological exams is important as you age as well. Seeing your primary care provider at least once a year can help with managing the symptoms of perimenopause and the transition into menopause.
