What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins can occur due to numerous factors. Genetics, lack of physical activity, and injuries are three of the most common reasons why patients develop spider veins. Trauma to a leg or arm, for instance, can cause damage to your body's veins, while excessive sitting can lead to blood pooling in your body.

We also find that pregnant women experience issues with spider veins, as hormones such as estrogen and progesterone impact vein quality. In men, spider veins can develop when multiple varicose veins stretch next to each other, impacting blood flow.

Our Spider Vein Procedures

Whether you're interested in spider vein treatment for cosmetic reasons or if you want to relieve soreness and itchiness, our nurse practitioners can use a wide range of procedures to treat both smaller and larger veins.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a treatment solution into your spider veins. This solution collapses the vein in on itself. It's completely harmless and highly effective; most patients see results in one or two sessions, and you won't have to interrupt your normal activity.



Typically, we use sclerotherapy for spider veins located on the legs, but it's also perfect for reticular veins located elsewhere in the body. Keep in mind that sclerotherapy is a treatment, not a cure; most patients require periodic retreatments every few years to prevent new spider veins from developing.

For pronounced reticular veins, as well as smaller varicose veins, we also use foam sclerotherapy. It's quite similar to regular sclerotherapy but involves combining gas with a liquid solution to enhance blood displacement. 

We do not offer laser treatment in our office.
